Short summary (English)

Department of Animal Science is organised to conduct research and provide teaching with respect to general knowledge coming from basic disciplines in Natural Sciences, such as are Biometrics, Genetics, Physiology, Reproduction and Veterinary Medicine, which are applied in Animal Science. We are mainly focused to the following research areas: - animal breeding and quantitative genetics, - applied genomics, - biometry, - conservation and population genetics, - meat science, - molecular genetics of animals, - physiology, - reproduction and veterinary prevention. To enhance research and provide practical knowledge to our students we established two laboratories: "Laboratory of conservation genetics" and "Laboratory of quantitative analyses" in which collected samples and data from field studies are analyzed.. Our research is connected with molecular analyses of DNA (markers: RFLPs, microsatellites, SNPs, mtDNA), quantitative analyses of molecular data (biodiversity studies, functional genomics, conservation of endangered breeds, population structure), statistical and quantitative methods applied to animal science (experimental design, organisation of breeding, estimation of genetic parameters and breeding values), analyses of milking characteristics, veterinary prevention with zoo-hygiene and evaluation of meat quality. As authors and co-authors we published our research in worldwide recognised journals (Animal Genetics; Conservation Genetics; Genetics, Selection, Evolution; Heredity; Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics; Journal of Animal Science; Journal of Dairy Science; Journal of Dairy Research; Journal of Heredity; Livestock Science; Nature Genetics; Small Ruminant Research; etc...). We would like to perform high quality research at the West Europe level, so, we are very much oriented toward participation in large EU projects.

Zavod za opće stočarstvo koncipiran je tako da za znanstvene i nastavne aktivnosti koristi znanja bazičnih disciplina prirodnih znanosti kao što su biometrika, genetika, fiziologija, reprodukcija te veterinarska medicina, a sve u svrhu primjene u stočarstvu. Fokusirani smo na slijedeća istraživačka područja: -stočarstvo i kvantitativna genetika -primijenjena genomika -biometrika -konzervacijska i populacijska genetika -kvaliteta mesa -molekularna genetika životinja -fiziologija -reprodukcija i veterinarska medicina Također u svrhu znanstvenih istraživanja te praktičnog izvođenja nastave organizirali smo dva laboratorija: Laboratorij za konzervacijsku genetiku te Laboratorij za kvantitativnu analizu. Istraživanja su vezana za molekularne analize DNA (biljezi: RFLP, mikrosateliti SNP, mtDNA), kvantitativne analize molekularnih podataka (studije biološke raznolikosti, genomika, konzervacija ugroženih pasmina te struktura populacija), statističke i kvantitativne metode primijenjene u stočarstvu (eksperimentalni dizajn, organizacija uzgoja, procjena genetskih parametara i uzgojnih vrijednosti), analiza muznih karakteristika, veterinarska prevencija sa zoohigijenom kao i ocjena kvalitete mesa. Autori smo i koautori mnogih istraživanja u svjetski prepoznatim časopisima (Animal Genetics; Conservation Genetics; Genetics, Selection, Evolution; Heredity; Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics; Journal of Animal Science; Journal of Dairy Science; Journal of Dairy Research; Journal of Heredity; Livestock Science; Nature Genetics; Small Ruminant Research; etc...). Cilj nam je sudjelovati u istraživanjima na najvišoj razini pa smo stoga i orijentirani prema prijavama i sudjelovanjima u većim EU projektima.
