Short summary (English)

The Computational biology and Bioinformatics group founded in 2002 and led by Prof. Vlahoviček is involved in scientific topics ranging from computational metagenomics and genomics of basal metazoans, application of machine learning methods in analyzing epigenetic signals to structural bioinformatics. The group is funded by two consecutive grants from Croatian Ministry of Science, the installation grant from EMBO Young Investigator Programme, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology grant and a collaborative grant within the FP6 project 043749 – RECOMPSOLS. the PI has over 15 years experience in computational biology research, has co-authored over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals (IF ranging from 3 to 17) and serves as an associate editor in journals BMC Structural biology and Database. Since 2008, he is the Head of the Biology Division with over 250 employees. From 2009 he holds a part-time faculty position at the University of Oslo, Norway, where he is involved in scientific and consulting activities within the Norwegian FUGE (Functional Genomics) consortium. The track record of the Bioinformatics group is verifiable by a prestigious list of journals in which we co-authored papers (only for 2010: PNAS, PLoS Genetics, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Glycobiology, Human Mutation). We have built a strong collaborative network with scientists across several continents working in prominent institutions (NIH, University of Cambridge, LMB Cambridge, MRC Edinburgh, EMBL-EBI, Max Planck MolGen Berlin, Wageningen University, ICGEB Trieste, Charles Univ. Prague, University of Tokyo, and others). The PI has been awarded two most prestigious national awards for science excellence – the Croatian national Academy of Sciences and Arts award in 2009 and the National Award for Science in 2011.

Short summary (Croatian)

Najveći dio financiranja Grupa dobija iz međunarodnih izvora, putem organizacija EMBO i ICGEB, a u proteklom razdoblju i iz šestog okvirnog programa Europske komisije. Također, financirani smo i od resornog ministarstva tijekom posljednja dva kruga znanstvenih projekata (2004. I 2007.). Grupa za bioinformatiku razvila je u deset godina svog postojanja snažnu nacionalnu i međunarodnu mrežu suradnika, i možemo se pohvaliti suradnjama s prestižnim institucijama poput National Institutes of Health, SAD; Sveučilišta u Cambridgeu UK, Pragu, Wageningenu, Tokiju, kao i institutima EMBL i EMBL-EBI, LMB Cambridge i mnogim drugima.
