Short summary (English)

Department’s research and consulting activities are oriented toward investigation and implementation of novel sustainable farming practices, technology development and monitoring, innovation in farming and making it more environmentally friendly while confronting new challenges such as climate change, energy production from biomass and biodiversity. Out of total 34 stuff employed within the Department, 14 are research and education stuff with doctoral degrees (DSc). Research intersts of investigators are: - Production Practices for Small Grains, Corn and Soybeans; - Improvement Production Practices of Alternative Crops; - Technology of sugar beet, oilseed rape, sunflower and other industrial crops production; - Forage production and utilisation on grasslands; - Technology of Production Oil and Fiber Flax and Tobacco, - Production practices for energy crops. The Department field research activities are performed at the two experimental stations: (i) the lowland station with 17 ha of arable land and (ii) the mountain station located in the protected area within the nature park with 55 ha of semi-natural grassland. The both stations are equipped with modern mechanisation for crop and forage production and conservation. The field trials are supported with wet chemistry laboratory, NIR spectroscopy and biological research using animals (in vitro degradability by automatic gas production units, in vivo digestibility and in sacco degradability studies) for the determination of the forage nutritive value and bio-wastes as potential feeds or feed ingredients for animals. All the research activities using animals are approved by the national competent authority ensuring implementation of fundamental ethical principles in experiments using animals.

Istraživačke i konzultantske aktivnosti Zavoda orijentirane su prema razvoju, istraživanju i primjeni novih održivih tehnologija proizvodnje u ratarstvu, inovacijama u ratarstvu koje će proizvodnju kulturnih biljaka učiniti ekološki prihvatljivijim i kojima će se moći odgovoriti na nove izazove u ratarstvu kao što su klimatske promjene, proizvodnja energije iz biomase i bioraznolikost. Od ukupno 34 stalno zaposlnih, 14 znanstvenika i nastavnika imaju doktorat znanosti. Istraživači sudjeluju u sljedećim istraživanjima: - Tehnologija proizvodnje strnih žitarica, kukuruza i soje, - Tehnologija proizvodnje alternativnih kultura, - Tehnologija proizvodnje šećerne repe, uljane repice, suncokreta i ostalih industrijskih kultura, - Proizvodnja krmnog bilja na oranicama i korištenje travnjaka, - Tehnologija proizvodnje uljanog i predivog lana te duhana i - Proizvodnja energetskih kultura. Zavod posjeduje 2 pokušališta na kojima se provode istraživačke aktivnosti. Prvo je smješteno u blizini Agronomskog fakulteta (Maksimir, 17 ha), a drugo je smješteno na planini Medvednica (brdrsko-planinsko pokušalište, 55 ha). Oba pokušališta opremljena su modernom mehanizacijom za precizno izvođenje svih agrotehničkih mjera u proizvodnji ratarskih i industrijskih kultura te u proizvodnji i konzerviranju krmog bilja. Zavod posjeduje i laboratoriji za vlažnu kemiju, gdje se uzorci sa pokusnih polja dodatno ispituju. Znanstvenici Zavoda provode i biološka istraživanjima na životinjama (in vitro razgradljivost, in vivo probavljivost i in saccco razgradljivost), kako bi odredili nutritivnu vrijednosti krme (komponente hrane ili gotova hrana za životinje). Istraživačke aktivnosti na životinjama odobrene su od strane hrvatskih institucija čime se jamči primjena osnovnih etičkih principa u eksperimentima sa životinjama.
