Basic activities of the Vegetable Crops Department are teaching, scientific research and professional work in the field of vegetable production, including spices, aromatic and medicinal herbs. Vegetable Crops Basic activities of the Vegetable Crops Department are teaching, scientific research and professional work in the field of vegetable production, including spices, aromatic and medicinal herbs. Vegetable Crops Department has a 2 ha experimental field in Maksimir in the near of the faculty. The smaller parts of the experimental field, along with lab exercises for the students, are high tunnels, heated and unheated greenhouses. In the last decade of the 20th century scientists of the Vegetable Crops Department began research with the introduction of lesser known cultivars for the fresh market consumption (chicory, pak choy, yard long bean, broccoli, zucchini). Application of the mycorrhiza in the vegetable transplants production, polymer mulches in the cultivation of pepper and melon, organic mulches in the tomato, leek and lettuce production, the use of polymers for directly covering kohlrabi and radish were specifically researched. In recent years research of hydroponic tomato production on inert substrates has started. Technology and cultivars of cabbage for sauerkraut production as a trade mark and broccoli cultivars for processing were conducted. Continual introduction of aromatic and medicinal plants from natural areas is conducted, their growing technology are improved and biologically active compounds are analyzed (basil, lavender, sage, fennel). Nowdays research are focused on: the introduction of new crops - sweet potato and yam; broccoli as functional food; content of nutrient solution for hydroponic fruit vegetables cultivation and growing of leafy vegetables in floating system.

Short summary (Croatian)
