Short summary (English)

The main area of research of Department's stuff is related within mycology. We focus on fungal secondary metabolites and their effects on the molecular and cell-level. Using several in vitro based assays we are trying to find out the effects of mycotoxins on human health. The methods include MTT-viability testing using different cell-lines, Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis assay (comet-assay) and micro-nucleus assays for detection of genotoxic effects. Furthermore, using in vitro methods we have capability to study antimicrobial effects of bio-active molecules. The methods we use are: micro-dilution assay i.e. MIC determination using TTC, "time-kill" assay, inhibition of germination of fungal cells. Department have a broad collection of microbial cultures, from clinical and environmental sources.

Glavna područja istraživanja djelatnika Zavoda vezana su za mikologiju. Usredotočeni smo na sekundarne metabolite gljivica i njihov utjecaj na molekularnoj i staničnoj razini. Korištenjem nekoliko testova temeljenih na in vitro metodi pokušavamo saznati učinke mikotoksina na zdravlje ljudi. Metode uključuju testiranje vijabilnosti (MTT-testom) korištenjem različitih staničnih linija, test jednostanične gel elektroforeze (kometni test) i mikronukleus test za utvrđivanje genotoksičnih učinaka. Nadalje, pomoću in vitro metoda imamo mogućnost za proučavanje antimikrobnih učinaka bio-aktivnih molekula. Metode koje koristimo su: mikrodilucijski test tj. MIC određivanje pomoću TTK, „time-kill“ test te određivanje inhibicije germinacije gljivičnih stanica. Zavod ima poveću zbirku mikrobnih kultura iz kliničkih i ekoloških izvora.
