Short summary (English)

The main focus of Dr. Rošin –Grget 's research is understanding the mechanisms of action of tobacco smoking on periodontal tissues as well as its impact on the development and progression of periodontal disease and dental caries among young adults. It provides important information to dental health professionals in planning treatment of periodontal diseases. Also, it provides informations useful for education of their smoking patients. Her research group is interested in the impact of smoking on the composition of saliva, in particular on its inorganic compounds. In addition, with changes in periodontal tissues and the saliva composition in smokers, her group determinates the concentrations of fluoride ions in the dental mineralized tissues after use of fluoride agents. They use electrochemical analysis fluoride ions in the material etched away from the enamel by ion selective fluoride electrode. The group is currently running a project in which is examining the influence of smoker's saliva on calcium fluoride formation on the enamel surface. Better and more complete understanding of the cariostatic effects of fluoride and the development of improved methods of application of fluoride could contribute to the prevention of dental decay. Fluoride is also a toxic substance. It is responsibility of health practitioners, especially those in dentistry, to be aware of toxic potential of fluoride and to ensure that it is used in ways that enhance dental health with minimal risk of adverse effects. This group could bring a new insight in the prevention and therapy of both oral and dental diseases.

Glavni cilj istraživanja Dr. Rošin-Grget jest razumijevanje mehanizma djelovanja pušenja cigareta na parodontna tkiva , kao i njihov utjecaj na nastanak i razvoj parodontne bolesti i zubnog karijesa u mladih ispitanika. Ono daje važe podatke liječnicima dentalne medicine pri planiranju liječenja paradontnih bolesti. Također, daje im korisne podatke za edukaciju mladih pušača. Grupu istraživača Dr. Rošin-Grget zanima i utjecaj pušenja na sastav sline, naročito na njezin anorganski dio. Pored promjena u parodontnom tkivu i sastavu sline pušača, njena grupa također istražuje i određuje koncentraciju fluoridnih iona u mineraliziranom tkivu zuba nakon uporabe fluoridnih sredstava. Koriste se elektrokemijskom analizom fluoridnih iona u materijalu izjetkanom iz cakline pomoću ionski selektivne fluoridne elektrode. Grupa trenutno radi na projektu kojim ispituju utjecaj sline pušača na stvaranje kalcijevog fluorida na površini zubne cakline. Bolje i potpunije razumijevanje kariostatskog učinka fluorida kao i poboljšanje metoda primjene fluorida može pridonijeti prevenciji nastanka zubnog karijesa. Fluoridi su također i toksične tvari. Velika je odgovornost zdravstvenih radnika, osobito onih u stomatologiji da budu svjesni toksičnosti fluorida i da zajamče njihovu uporabu na način koji pospješuje zdravlje uz minimalan rizik nuspojava. Ova grupa može pružiti novi pogled na prevenciju i liječenje oralnih i dentalnih bolesti.
