Short summary (English)

The main focus of research of Prof. Škerk and her group are urinary tract infections (UTI) and urogenital and sexually transmitted infections, especially prostatitis. They investigate the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation and treatment of UTIs in the Republic of Croatia and together with several eminent experts they developed and published in 2004, the first Croatian national guidelines for the treatment and prophylaxis of UTIs in adults, and then together with the working group of the Croatian Ministry of Health, the national ISKRA guidelines. The problem of prostatitis syndrome has been investigated and explored at the Department for more than 10 years and in 2004 we were the first ones to develop recommendations for the treatment of prostatitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis with azithromycin pulse therapy with a total dose of 4.5 g. Together with colleagues researchers from Italy we compiled original recommendations for the treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis with combination therapy of fluoroquinolones and azithromycin. These schemes have not been patented, but are widely accepted throughout the world. So far, four scientific research projects of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (MSES) have been performed at the Department, and currently we have two ongoing research projects, one funded by the MSES and one by the Croatian Science Foundation. Dr. Škerk has organized six international symposia in Opatija in the period from 2004 to 2009, and between 2010 and 2012 three congresses on urogenital and sexually transmitted infections with international participation.

Short summary (Croatian)
