Short summary (English)

Department of animal science has been engaged in three main areas: a) educational activity in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and specialist study; b) scientific research activities in the field of animal breeding and production technology in different species: cows, pigs, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys. c) expert advisory activities in above mentioned areas. Scientific and expert activity is directed to definition and standardization of local breeds of different animal species and their conservation. For that purpose, Laboratory for genetic identification of domestic animals was founded, which is qualified for genetic analysis based on DNA-sequencing. Scientific activity is also directed towards milk and meat quality, specially on standardization of production of traditional meat products. Trough their work, employees of Department develop new technologies in cattle breeding, and milk and meet production. Area of sheep and goat breeding is also covered, with emphasis on standardization and conservation of original breeds. In pig breeding area emphasis is on developing methods for genetic evaluation of pigs. Scientific and expert activity also covers horse and donkey breeding and their usage. Results obtained in researches are often applied in production conditions and used for consulting purposes. Considerable level of collaboration with animal breeders, industry and institution was achieved resulting in several PhD thesis and develop technologies in animal breeding and production.

Zavod za specijalno stočarstvo je angažiran u tri glavna područja: a) nastavne aktivnosti na preddiplomskom, diplomskom, doktorskom i specijalističkom studiju, b) znanstveno istraživačke djelatnosti u području uzgoja životinja i tehnologije proizvodnje kod različitih vrsta domaćih životinja: goveda, svinje, ovce, koze, konja i magaraca. c) stručne i savjetodavne aktivnosti iz gore navedenih područja. Znanstvena i stručna djelatnost usmjerena je na definiranje i standardizaciju lokalnih pasmina različitih vrsta domaćih životinja i njihovo očuvanje. U tu svrhu osnovan je Laboratorij za genetičku identifikaciju domaćih životinja, koji je kvalificiran za genetske analize na temelju DNK-sekvenciranja. Znanstvena djelatnost je usmjerena na proizvodnju mlijeka i mesa, posebno standardizaciju proizvodnje tradicionalnih mesnih proizvoda. Kroz svoj ​​rad, djelatnici Zavoda doprinose razvoju novih tehnologija u govedarstvu, posebice proizvodnji mlijeka i mesa. Područje uzgoja ovaca i koza uzgoj također je obuhvaćeno istraživanjima, s naglaskom na standardizaciji i očuvanju izvornih pasmina. Na području svinjogojstva, naglasak je na razvoju metoda za genetsku procjenu svinja. Znanstveno i stručno djelovanje također obuhvaća uzgoj konja i magaraca i njihovo korištenje. Rezultati dobiveni u navedeim istraživanjima primjenjuju se u praktičnoj proizvodnji, kao i za savjetodavne svrhe. Ostvaren je značajan stupanj suradnje sa uzgajivača domaćih životinja, industrijskim subjektima te institucijama, što je rezultiralo s nekoliko doktorskih disertacija, a posljedično unaprijeđenju cijelog područja istraživanja.
