Short summary (English)

In the field of agricultural zoology the main aim of the research are pests, and also useful animal organisms in crop production, as well as preventive and curative measures for plant protection, which prevent the harmful effects of pests and enhance the role of beneficial organisms. The subject of research is fauna of harmful and useful insects, mites, nematodes, snails, birds and rodents that occur in a variety of agricultural crops. These researches establish the problems related to the control of some economically important pests, especially to resistance of organisms in each group of zoocides, and find environmentally favorable method of application of pesticides, according to the principles of integrated pest management. In addition to preventive measures of controlling pests and besides chemical control, the researches determine the effectiveness and efficiency of biological control by using the predatory and parasitic insects, mites and nematodes. Within research, through cooperation with business entities and state and local governments, the organisms listed as quarantine pests in Croatia are also covered. Besides defining their distribution, the most appropriate measures of control and prevention of spreading are determined. A special multi-year programs were used in monitoring the distribution of species Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Western Corn Rootworm), Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida (potato cyst nematodes) which are the subject of ongoing research. The staffs of the Department are leaders of numerous national and international scientific and technical research projects.

Short summary (Croatian)
