Scientific and research expertises of Department of Process Metallurgy include the production of raw iron and steel, metal processing via founding, resistance of metals to various forms of corrosion, investigation of structure and properties of carbon material, extraction of metals from depleted raw materials and usage of waste and secondary products of metallurgical processes. An integral part of activities is related to specialist activities, especially in the field of metallographic testing for the needs of businesses.

Područje znanstvenoistraživačkog rada Zavoda za procesnu metalurgiju obuhvaća proizvodnju sirovog željeza i čelika, oblikovanje metala lijevanjem, ispitivanje otpornosti metalnih materijala na različite oblike korozije, ispitivanje strukture i svojstava ugljičnih materijala, izdvajanje metalnih elemenata iz siromašnih sirovina, te iskorištenje otpadnih i sekundarnih produkata metalurških procesa. Sastavni dio rada je i stručna aktivnost, posebice u području metalografskih ispitivanja za potrebe gospodarskih subjekata.
