Research area of Department is related to the forest harvesting technology of wood production , technical and technological features of mechanized equipment in forestry , technical , ergonomic , safety and environmental acceptability of forest machines , the quality and structure of forest products , the potential use of forest biomass for energy purposes and quality of solid biofuels , the study of working enviroment of forest workers and the impact of environmental factors on their health , opening the forest with forest roads, forest fire roads and their design and maintenance , optimization and organization of forest work , forestry entrepreneurship and business efficiency, organizational culture of forestry companies and models of planning and decision-making in forestry. Within the Department two journals are published : Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering (scientific journal) and Nova mehanizacija šumarstva (scientific-technical journal). Within the Department operate two laboratories : Laboratory for technical - technological research in forestry and Laboratory of forest biomass.

Područje istraživanja Zavoda je vezano uz tehnologije pridobivanja drva, tehničko-tehnološke značajke mehaniziranih sredstva rada u šumarstvu, tehničku, ergonomsku, sigurnosnu i okolišnu pogodnostišumskih strojeva, kakvoću i strukturu šumskih proizvoda, potencijale korištenja šumske biomase u energetske svrhe te kakvoće krutih biogoriva, proučavanje radne okoline šumskih radnika i utjecaja okolišnih čimbenika na njihovo zdravlje, otvaranje šuma šumskim prometnicama išumskim protupožarnim prometnicama te njihovo projektiranje i održavanje, organizacijiu i optimizaciju šumskog rada, šumarsko poduzetništvo te efikasnost poslovanja i organizacijsku kulturu šumarske tvrtke te modele planiranja i odlučivanja u šumarstvu. U okviru se Zavoda uređuju i za tisak pripremaju dva časopisa: Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering – znanstveni časopis i Nova mehanizacija šumarstva – znanstveno – stručni časopis. U okviru Zavoda djeluju 2 laboratorija: Laboratorij za Tehničko – tehnološka istraživanja u šumarstvu te Laboratorij za šumsku biomasu.
