Short summary (English)

The research focus of the Department of electrochemistry covers a wide variety of basic and applied science. The fields include but are not limited to: - Electrochemical investigations of metal materials (passivity, corrosion, and corrosion protection) based on microstructural and structural properties and electronic structure of surface films, i.e. on electrochemical material science concept - Formation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers of organic molecules on solid substrates - Electrochemical (corrosion) studies of biocompatible metal materials. Development of new functional materials and surfaces for application in biochemical engineering and medicine for implants (orthodontic and cardiovascular implants). - Development, synthesis and characterization of nanostructured catalysts that are expensive and complex part of low-temperature membrane fuel cells and hydrogen generators - Design and manufacture of polymer/metal oxide/active carbon composite materials for supercapacitors - The synthesis and the application of highly-functionalized and nano-structured polymeric materials for various applications in electrochemical energy sources and molecular electronics. - Electrochemical synthesis of biologically active pharmaceutical intermediates. - Physico-chemical profiling of organic compounds. - Electrochemical studies of metal corrosion inhibition by non-toxic organic compounds - Protection of patinated bronze artifacts - Investigation of stainless steel localized corrosion by electrochemical methods - Testing and optimization of cathodic protection systems - Stray current corrosion testing by stray current mapper - Electrochemical and molecular modelling investigation of natural compounds as corrosion inhibitors for steel - Prevention and solving corrosion problems in the economy (determination of the cause of corrosion damage and finding ways of surmounting them, Laboratory and field testing for determination of intensity and causes of corrosion activity, The selection, design and optimization of corrosion protection systems. - Exploring the antioxidant potential of food and beverage and antioxidant status of biological samples by electrochemical and spectrophotometric methods

Istraživački rad na Zavodu za elektrokemiju obuhvaća širok spektar temeljnih i primijenjenih znanosti. Konkretno, područja istraživanja su: - Elektrokemijska istraživanja metalnih materijala (pasivitet, korozija i zaštita materijala od korozije) temeljena na mikrostrukturnim i strukturnim svojstvima, te elektronskoj strukturi površinskih filmova, odnosno elektrokemijskom konceptu znanosti o materijalima - Sinteza i karakterizacija samoorganizirajućih monoslojeva organskih molekula na anorganskim materijalima - Elektrokemijska (korozijska) istraživanja biokompatibilnih metalnih materijala. Razvoj novih funkcionalnih materijala i površina s primjenom u biokemijskom inženjerstvu i medicini za izradu implantata (ortodontski, krvožilni i plućni implantati) - Razvoj, sinteza i karakterizacija nano-strukturiranih katalizatora nisko-temperaturnih membranskih gorivnih članaka i generatora vodika - Razvoj i priprava polimer/metalni oksid/aktivni ugljik kompositnih materijala za primjenu u elektrokemijskim superkondenzatorima. - Sinteza i primjena visoko-funkcionalnih i nano-strukturiranih polimernih materijala za različite primjene koje uključuju elektrokemijske spremnike i pretvornike energije te molekularnu elektroniku. - Elektrokemijska sinteza biološki aktivnih intermedijera. - Određivanje fizikalno-kemijskih svojstava organskih spojeva. - Elektrokemijska istraživanja netoksičnih organskih inhibitora korozije metala - Zaštita patiniranih brončanih predmeta - Istraživanje lokalizirane korozije nehrđajućih čelika elektrokemijskim metodama - Ispitivanje i optimiranje sustava katodne zaštite - Istraživanje korozije uzrokovane lutajućim strujama stray current mapper-om (SCM). - Istraživanje prirodnih spojeva kao potencijalnih inhibitora korozije čelika elektrokemijskim metodama i molekulskim modeliranjem - Prevencija i rješavanje korozijskih problema u privredi (Utvrđivanje uzroka nastanka korozijskih oštećenja i iznalaženje načina njihova uklanjanja, Laboratorijska i terenska ispitivanja čija je svrha utvrđivanje intenziteta i uzroka korozijske aktivnosti, Izbor, dizajn i optimiranje sustava za zaštitu od korozije) - Istraživanje antioksidativnog potencijala hrane i pića te antioksidativnog statusa bioloških uzoraka elektrokemijskim i spektrofotometrijskim metodama.
