Short summary (English)

The group applies the general principles of physical chemistry and chemical engineering to several fields of expertise. I) Membrane processes (reverse osmosis and nanofiltration) as applied in A) desalination of marine and brackish water for potable water production, including project design, pilot plant and operating plant experience and B) removal of organic micropollutants, like pesticides, antibiotics, solvents, etc. from natural waters and wastewaters. II) Development of nanostructured polymeric, ceramic and hybrid materials for applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, biosensors, highly-functionalized heterogeneous catalysts and coatings with special emphasis on sol-gel processes, solid-state reaction kinetics, resin cure kinetics. III) Formation of mass and energy balance equations for complex reacting and non-reacting systems, calculation of thermodynamic properties of gas, liquid and solid systems, calculation and experimental determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, including polymer and electrolyte solutions. The group offers the expertise in natural and wastewater physical and chemical analysis, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes testing, experimental determination of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of solid-state and resin-curing reactions, structural analysis of crystalline substances, thermal analysis of materials, including thermal degradation properties, characterization and identification of polymeric materials, determination of polymer solution properties, etc. Current projects deal with I) studying interactions between RO/NF membrane material and solutes, examining morphological features of membranes, estimating membrane separation properties, establishing solute rejection mechanisms and II) investigating novel routes to highly-porous hydroxyapatite ceramics, designing new sol-gel hybrids for special coatings, preparing nanocomposites based on polymer matrix and organically modified synthetic layered minerals.

Istraživačka skupina primjenjuje opća načela fizikalne kemije i kemijskog inženjerstva na različita područja ekspertize. I) Membranski procesi (reverzna osmoza i nanofiltracija) u primjeni na A) desalinaciju morske i bočate vode za pridobivanje pitke vode, uključujući projektno iskustvo te iskustvo na pilotnim i postrojenjima u radu i B) uklanjanje organskih mikrozagađivala, poput pesticida, antibiotika, otapala, itd. iz prirodnih i otpadnih voda. II) Razvoj nanostrukturiranih polimernih, keramičkih i hibridnih materijala za primjene poput inženjerstva tkiva, isporuke lijekova, biosenzora, visokofunkcionaliziranih heterogenih katalizatora i prevlaka s posebnim naglaskom na sol-gel procese, kinetiku reakcija u čvrstom stanju, kinetiku očvršćivanja smola. III) Oblikovanje bilanci tvari i energije za složene reaktivne i nereaktivne sustave, izračunavanje termodinamičkih svojstava plinovitih, kapljevitih i krutih sustava, izračunavanje i eksperimentalno određivanje faznih ravnoteža u složenim sustavima, uključuući polimerne i elektrolitske otopine. Skupina nudi ekspertizu u kemijskoj i fizikalnoj analizi prirodnih i otpadnih voda, testiranju reverznoosmotskih i nanofiltracijskih membrana, eksperimentalnom određivanju kinetičkih i termodinamičkih parametara reakcija u čvrstom stanju, odnosno reakcija očvršćivanja smola, strukturnoj analizi kristalnih tvari, toplinskoj analizi materijala, uključujući toplinsku razgradnju, karakterizaciji i identifikaciji polimernih materijala, određivanju svojstava polimernih otopina, itd. Projekti u tijeku bave se I) istraživanjem međudjelovanja RO/NF membrana i otopljenih tvari, morfoloških karakteristika membrana, njihovih separacijskih svojstava te utvrđivanjem mehanizama odbijanja otopljenih tvari i II) istraživanjem novih putova da visokoporozne hidroksiapatitne keramike, dizajniranjem novih sol-gel hibrida za napredne prevlake, pripravom nanokompozita polimerne matrice i organski modificiranih sintetskih slojevitih minerala.
