European Digital Innovation Hub for the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare and Medicine (AI4Health.Cro) invites students, startups, innovators, IT professionals, and healthcare experts to apply for the AI4Health.Cro Innovation Competition and develop an innovative solution that helps people with type 2 diabetes better manage their prescribed therapy. The total prize fund is €15,000!
he competition is organized in partnership with AstraZeneca and Novo Nordisk Croatia, and applications are open until 9 March 2026 (12:00 PM).

Your challenge?
The challenge is to develop an AI solution capable of identifying, at an early stage, when a patient begins to miss doses or discontinue their prescribed therapy, and to support physicians and nurses in providing timely, clear, and practical interventions that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday clinical practice.
Teams are expected to develop a prototype AI tool that:
- identifies people with type 2 diabetes who are at risk of not adhering to their prescribed medication regimen.
- explains which factors and signals led to that prediction.
- translates that insight into a practical solution by designing a concrete intervention that can be implemented in primary healthcare settings (general practice/family medicine clinics) and demonstrating it through an interactive prototype, accompanied by a brief explanation of how the solution could be scaled and integrated into the healthcare system.
Who can apply?
The competition is open to all adults (18+) with full legal capacity, including students, startups, researchers, development engineers, and data science/AI professionals. Interdisciplinary teams of 2 to 5 members are especially encouraged.
Why this challenge?
Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing healthcare challenges worldwide. An estimated 589 million adults are currently living with diabetes, and that number is projected to rise to 853 million by 2050. Procjene iz istraživanja često navode da se terapije dosljedno pridržava tek oko 50–60% pacijenata. Posljedice su jasne, teža kontrola bolesti, veći rizik komplikacija i više pogoršanja.

You will work with real, anonymized healthcare data in a controlled environment and in full compliance with the GDPR, with support from the Croatian Health Data Centre (CHDC) project led by the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ).
