In 2019, the University of Zagreb joined the Regional Innovation Scheme in the field of health managed by the Knowledge and Innovation Community in Health (EIT Health) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. The University of Zagreb became the EIT Health Hub for Croatia, joining the EIT Health network of thirteen regional hubs working to strengthen local innovation ecosystems.

The InnoStars Cluster is one of the geographical areas of EIT Health. It covers half of Europe, including Poland, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Greece, and Romania. These are a group of countries that the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) has qualified as moderate innovators. Therefore, in 2014, the EIT Community introduced the EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (EIT RIS) to encourage the transfer of best practices and knowledge and to stimulate the creation of new innovations.
